What Is Trauma?
Trauma is the body and mind’s natural response to an overwhelming or distressing event—something that happens too fast, too intensely, or too soon for your system to process. It isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign that you survived something deeply painful. Trauma can stem from events like accidents, natural disasters, abuse, violence, chronic stress, or the sudden loss of someone you love. And while the experience may be shared, the response is deeply personal—some people feel the impact immediately, while others don’t notice the effects until much later.
No matter how trauma shows up for you, healing is possible—and you deserve support that is gentle, attuned, and safe.
How Trauma Affects Your Body and Emotions
Trauma can shape your everyday life in ways you might not even realize. You may feel shame, anxiety, guilt, depression, numbness, or physical pain. Many people notice they feel disconnected from their bodies—unable to access painful memories, but also unable to fully feel joy, pleasure, or excitement. You may find yourself on “autopilot,” startling easily, feeling sudden waves of anxiety, or struggling to stay grounded in the present moment.
These reactions aren’t character flaws—they’re trauma responses. Your body has been trying to protect you.
How Trauma Shows Up in Relationships
Trauma often resurfaces in relationships, especially when vulnerability, trust, or intimacy is involved. You may struggle with:
Trusting people
Enjoying connection
Feeling safe in sexual or intimate relationships
It’s not that you don’t want closeness—you’ve simply learned to survive by guarding yourself.
How Trauma Shows Up at Work
Trauma doesn’t stay at home when you go to work. It can impact your ability to:
Feel confident in your abilities
Follow through on tasks
Trust that your best is truly enough
You may doubt yourself—even when you’re giving everything you have.
How Trauma Impacts Self-Esteem
Trauma can deeply influence the way you see yourself. You may struggle with:
Feeling worthy of being yourself
Feeling shame for your needs or desires
Believing you’re “good enough”
Feeling like a failure, even when you’re trying
These feelings are not the truth of who you are—they’re echoes of what you’ve been through.
Healing trauma requires compassion, patience, and a therapist who understands how trauma truly lives in the body, mind, and relationships. You don’t have to carry this alone. Together, we can work toward safety, connection, and a version of life where you feel grounded, empowered, and whole again.
If you’re ready to begin your healing journey, I’m here to help.
